Strong Message from West Allis West Milwaukee Educators

Recertification election results are in and once again the WAWM EA has won a big victory with an overwhelming 99% percent of actual voters and 80% percent of all possible voters, voicing their desire to maintain our Association’s legal certification.  We want to give thanks to all of you for this important vote of confidence, which we will never take for granted.

As part of Act 10, the recertification election process was designed to undermine the efforts of teachers and other public employees to maintain their local associations. The process is costly, time consuming, and holds local associations to an entirely unreasonable standard of achieving 51% support of all eligible voters (not just those who vote).  As we know from news 2014 general election reports about of the worst voter turnout in 72 years, no politician holding public office must meet such a standard. Nor do private sector employees or police or firefighters have to meet this standard to maintain their unions.

The recertification election has been an opportunity for us to send a strong message to our administration, school board and state level politicians, that we are united and determined to have a voice over livelihoods and working conditions. We are professionals and deserve to be treated with respect. Our overwhelming victory is a clear mandate. Our District needs to continue to respect our voice by dealing openly and fairly with the WAWM EA - our democratically run, representative organization.

Locally, the WAWM EA will persist in all our efforts to preserve and create compensation and learning conditions that attract and retain the very best professional educators. At the state level, we will continue to work to abolish the recertification requirement, overturn Act 10’s limits on our ability to associate with each other and negotiate with our employer, and restore the rights and respect that public educators deserve.

The leadership of the WAWM EA would also like to take this opportunity to wish each of you safe travels and a terrific Thanksgiving holiday with your family and friends.
